Always accompany your children as they trick or treat.
Make sure your child carries a flashlight, a glow stick, or has reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible to cars.
Teach basic safety rules such as not getting into cars with strangers, look both ways before crossing the street, never enter a house, and only approach well lit homes.
Remind children not to eat any candy until a parent has inspected it first.
Think twice before carrying a plastic props such as butcher knives or axes, they may cause injury if fallen on, or may scare other trick-or-treaters.
Talk to trick-or-treaters in your family about the difference between good Halloween fun, and misbehavior. Incidences of vandalism and animal cruelty increase around Halloween, both are punishable by law.
Tips for Homeowners
Make sure your yard is clear of items such as rakes, hoses, flowerpots, and other items that children could trip on.
Keep walkways clear of leaves an other debris.
Restrain pets or put them up to protect the pet, and the trick-or-treaters.
If you use a candle in your jack-o'-lantern, make sure your pumpkin is well away from where children may stand.
Make sure your home and yard are well lit to help children make it safely to and from your door.
Think carefully of the children in your neighborhood when buying candy. Try to avoid treats such as gum and hard candy that may pose choking hazards for young children.
Consider offering healthy alternatives for trick-or-treaters including single-serve boxes of cereal, packages fruit snacks, or non-food treats such as plastic rings, or stickers.
